What is mobile number portability (MNP):Enterprise Services from airtel

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is a facility which allows you to move to airtel while retaining your existing operator’s mobile number. MNP is applicable for porting between mobile operators only, in the same telecom Circle. Also, by regulation, customer can port-into another operator only if he/she has been with that operator for at least 90 days.

MNP will be available across airtel network from 20th January, 2011. Move to airtel without changing your mobile number. Non-airtel mobile customers now have an opportunity to become part of airtel family of more than 14.5 cr mobile connections, and experience India’s largest network coverage and world-class customer services.

To begin with, you need to generate UPC (Unique Porting Code) by sending SMS to 1900. UPC is an alphanumeric code allocated, upon request, by a mobile operator to its subscriber for the purpose of facilitation of porting of his/her mobile number to another operator.
  • SMS to be sent : PORT <your Mobile Number> to 1900. Operator SMS charges will be applicable.
• Eg. SMS PORT 98XXXXXXXX to 1900
2. After sending SMS to 1900, you will receive UPC (Unique Porting Code) as a SMS from 1901 giving 8 digit alpha-numeric Unique Porting Code (UPC) and UPC expiry date in MM/DD/YYYY format
3. Visit your nearest airtel outlet / showroom
4. Fill airtel Mobile Number Porting (MNP) form providing details like
  • Current Mobile Number
• Current Operator name
• UPC code
5. Submit Address & Id proof documents, self-attested photo and last bill copy of postpaid connection (if applicable) along-with filled MNP form and Customer Agreement Form.
6. Buy the airtel MNP SIM card from airtel outlet / showroom. SIM charges, talktime value and porting charge are non-refundable in the event of cancellation / rejection of port-in request.
7. airtel will send an SMS on your old/existing operator’s SIM (existing connection) intimating about the porting date and time, i.e. the date and approximate time till when you can continue to use your existing operator’s SIM card.
8. There will be a 2-hour ‘no service period’ which will begin after the porting time as given above. The ‘no service period’ will be between 12 midnight to 5 am during which your mobile service will not be active on any SIM. All efforts will be made to ensure that this ‘no service period’ causes minimum inconvenience to you.
9. After the ‘no service period’, you can replace your existing operator’s SIM card with the new airtel SIM card in your handset.

India-Google+:The quick look with mobiles

Lightning-fast group chat. Photos that upload themselves. A bird's-eye view of what's happening nearby. We built Google+ with mobile in mind.
Real-life sharing,
rethought for the web.

A quick look at Google+

Google+ makes connecting on the web more like connecting in the real world. Share your thoughts, links and photos with the right circles. Use easy, spontaneous video chat to strike up conversations with as many as nine people at once. Get everyone on the same page with fast, simple group chat. We’re very excited about the new approach to sharing we’ve created through Google+, but this is really just the beginning.
Circles

You share different things with different people. But sharing the right stuff with the right people shouldn’t be a hassle. Circles make it easy to put your friends from Saturday night in one circle, your parents in another, and your boss in a circle by himself, just like real life.
Hangouts

Bumping into friends while you’re out is one of the best parts of going out and about. With Hangouts, spontaneity hits the web. Whether you’re home in your pajamas or hitting the streets with your mobile phone, video hangouts let you bring up to 9 people into your world. It’s the next best thing to everyone being there.
Games

Google+ has a game room.

Play poker, build a new civilization, humiliate a pig, or just click wildly at anything that moves. When you do something worth talking about, it’s easy to share it just with the people interested in your gaming updates. Beating a friend’s high score is always a good excuse to say hi.
Search

What was that restaurant your friend was raving about last week? Who’s got some good tips on ballroom dancing? What’s it like to be at the World Cup? Search brings you updates from your circles, news from around the web and

public Google+ posts, giving you instant access to the topics you care about and the people who care about them along with you.
Taking photos is fun. Sharing photos is fun. Getting photos off your phone and on to the web is pretty much the opposite of fun. That’s why we created Instant Upload: so that you never have to worry about losing those memories. From now on, your photos upload themselves.

Variant of RFID-radio frequency identification:NFC

NFC
NFC, or near-field communication, is a variant of RFID, or radio frequency identification. It is an ultra short range wireless technology that allows communication and data exchange between two devices held in tight proximity - about 4 cm apart.

Bluetooth is also a short-range high frequency wireless technology but one that allows interaction between communication devices as much as 10 meters apart.
NFC-enabled smartphones have the potential to replace credit cards. This is because NFC phones pack a smart chip - a complex 80-character code that is really hard to crack. Such a device can safely store confidential credit card details and be handy for purchases on the go.

Frost & Sullivan predicts the technology will revolutionise e-commerce and drive over $150 billion worth of transactions by 2015, bulk of which is expected to be powered by NFC phones.
NFC can be deployed in ticketing services, rural banking, interactive and targeted advertising, healthcare, hospitality, libraries and pharmacies. In fact, an NFC phone could become the single-key to access to your car, home and office.
Any device, a cellphone, a camera or a watch, can be equipped with an NFC 'initiator', which is simply an antenna that can store data. If the device is an NFC smartphone, the 'initiator' and 'target' (an NFC reader) need to be up close for data exchange to happen.

The 'reader' is attached to a point-of-sale (PoS) terminal or cash-register in a retail store that accepts NFC payments. A simple wave of the phone can pay for a purchase. Alternatively, two NFC phones can be tapped lightly to exchange business cards.

Geeks claim that in standby mode, a well-designed NFC solution does not consume any power. And since transactions happen in seconds, the power drain is not huge.
Globally, NFC adoption is picking up via smartphones. RIM, Nokia, Samsung and HTC have unveiled NFC smartphones. Apple iPhone5 is tipped to support NFC too. Google Wallet - a mobile payments technology that can be downloaded on some US mobile networks - is growing the NFC ecosystem. Payment trials have also begun in Australia, Singapore and China.
The technology is still in its infancy here. As of now, the Reserve Bank does not recognise NFC mobile payment transactions and PoS terminals accepting NFC payments don't exist. But NFC-enabled phones like BlackBerry's Touch Bold 9900 and Curve 9360, Samsung's Nexus S and Galaxy S II and Nokia's C7, 700, 701 and 600 are available. For NFC to take off, RBI has to frame norms and banks, carriers, credit card companies, apps developers and PoS terminal makers have to team up.

But awareness levels are growing and NFC is making some waves in entertainment. Shah Rukh Khan starrer Ra.One was the first movie to be marketed by Nokia using NFC technology. Armed with an NFC phone, you can download the movie content by merely tapping the device on a NFC-tagged movie poster at a Nokia priority outlet or a partner multiplex.

The new software update iOS 5.0.1 by Apple-to fix widespread problems:iphone 4s

Apple iphone4s

Apple issued a software update to its latest mobile operating system in a move to fix widespread problems with the battery life of the iPhone 4S.

The software update, iOS 5.0.1 also adds multi-tasking gestures to early versions of the iPad and closes a security loophole that could have duped users into loading malware onto their iPhones and iPads through Apple’s App Store.

Complaints about the disappointing battery life began popping up immediately after the release of the iPhone 4S last month, which Apple acknowledged in a statement last week.

“A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices,” Apple wrote. “We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life, and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” The software update was the first one issued by Apple that was pushed to users over the cellular networks, rather than requiring them to sync up their devices with their laptops.

Airtel Delhi Half Marathon race:"Gold Label Event"-registration process to Friends

It’s that time of the year again when Delhi's sports lovers come together to reaffirm their commitment towards converting the city into a healthier and fitter one through the simple, but joyful task of running. Around 30,000 sports loving people and health and fitness enthusiasts are expected to come together to run shoulder to shoulder with some of the world's leading distance runners along with India's best when the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon will be flagged off in Delhi on November 27, 2011, under the aegis of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). The world's most prestigious Half Marathon race, recognised by IAAF as a "Gold Label Event" and certified by the Association of International Marathons and Road Races, returns for the seventh year, and for the fourth time in its current avatar of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. This year the marathon is dedicated to ‘Friends’ and invites all like minded people to come together in true spirit of camaraderie and friendship.

The registrations for the event were declared open by Sanjay Kapoor, CEO-India & South Asia, of Bharti Airtel, in the presence of Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of Delhi, Bipash Basu, the ‘Face of the Event’, high ranking officials from AFI, the various partners to the event and Anil Singh and Vivek B Singh of Procam International, the promoters of the event at a press conference at the Official Host Hotel Le Meridien in New Delhi on Tuesday, August 23.

The occasion was also used to introduce Timex as the new Timing Partner to the event and announce the Inter-Collegiate Sporting Challenge, an exciting initiative targeted at the vast resources of athletic talent present in Delhi’s colleges. Some novel additions aimed at enhancing the running experience of the serious amateur runners were also announced.

Announcing the registrations open, Sanjay Kapoor, CEO-India & South Asia, Bharti Airtel said, “Airtel’s success story is synonymous with determination, perseverance and the ability to never lose sight of the long term goal, just like a seasoned runner. We salute the spirit of forging ahead in the long race and are delighted to be associated with the Delhi Half Marathon for the 4th consecutive year. Taking a leaf out of our new campaign “Har ek friend zaroori hai yaar”, we urge all of you to bring alive the spirit of togetherness and camaraderie. As we come closer to ADHM 2011, I am confident that the city of Delhi will take a lead in inspiring friends to come together and participate in large numbers.”

Prize money of USD 210,000 on offer helps the event maintain its status as the world's richest half marathon and is expected to attract 40 of the world's top 100 male and female long distance athletes. The event will also witness the presence of some of the biggest names from the world of sport as Event Ambassadors.

Boost to serious runners: The practice of putting a chip on the shoes of all half marathon participants since the last two years has been welcomed by one and all and has helped elevate the level of the half marathon field to an extent where all participants in that category can be termed serious runners.

Going further, promoters Procam International will recognize the efforts of the serious runners by offering priority starts to them based on their timings. Based on the timing certificates, runners will be eligible for priority lineups on race day and will be divided into four sections. The first section will be for runners under two hours, followed by those between 2 hours to under 2 hours, 30 minutes. The third section will be for runners between 2 hours, 30 minutes to under 3 hours, while the last section will be for runners of 3 hours and above.

The timing certificate will also ensure that the applicant gets preference over non-timed participants in the registration process. There will also be a number of running places reserved for women applicants to encourage them to train and run in the half marathon. Applicants who are not timed will fall in the open category, for which there will be limited places that will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

It is evident from the number of people registering for the half marathon, that the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon has helped inculcate the culture of running and fitness among the populace of Delhi. Last year around 8,000 people registered for the half marathon and the figure is expected to be higher this time around as 10,000 running spaces have been reserved for the Half Marathon category.

Besides the Half Marathon, which occupies pride of place, race day has been packed with features like the Great Delhi Run, the Senior Citizen's Run and the Wheelchair Event, giving every Delhiite above the age of 12 an opportunity to emerge winners in their own right.

Inter-Collegiate Sporting Challenge: Delhi’s Universities and colleges enjoy a rich and glorious sporting tradition and have helped create many national and international sportspersons in various disciplines. The Inter-Collegiate Sporting Challenge will now give these colleges a further opportunity to earn for themselves the unique distinction of being the Champion College of the Delhi Half Marathon. What better platform than an IAAF Gold Label event and what better inspiration than to be running alongside some of the world’s and India’s leading long distance athletes.

While invitations will be sent to all the universities of Delhi, participation will be restricted to only 30 college teams and entries will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Only one team will be allowed per college and each team should comprise three members between the age of 17 to 23. Of the three members, at least one member should be a female. Girls colleges can field an all-girls team. Each member will be required to run approximately 7 kms.

The champion college will win prize money of Rs 30,000 besides a replica of the rotating trophy, while the 1st runner-up and second runner-up teams will take home Rs 15,000 and Rs 9,000 respectively. The members of the winning teams will be presented with medals and merit certificates, while participation certificates will be awarded to the members of all the other teams.

New Timing Partner: As part of its association with the three Gold Label distance running events promoted by Procam International, global watch major Timex will be the Timing Partner of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. The association kick started with the World 10K Bangalore and will continue with the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and the Mumbai Marathon.

Timex has a history of sporting associations and has always chosen to associate with events where split-second timing and precision is of the essence. The global watch major has been the principal sponsor and the exclusive Official Timing Partner of the prestigious ING New York City Marathon and the Trusted Training Partner of the New York Giants. Over the years, Timex has always encouraged running and has been closely involved with Marathons and been the global sponsor for Triathlons internationally with the Timex Multisport Team competing in Triathlon competitions worldwide. Ironman is a classic case of a long-term Timex association which has fuelled extreme sports and the concept of racing against time for years now.

Registration process: Registration for the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon can be done online through the event website www.procamrunning.in or duly filled entry forms, along with the applicable fee, can be mailed to P.O. Box No. 3634, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi -110 024.

Small markets:adv and disadv of buying mobile phones accessories

People say that even if these are small mistakes, these are still mistakes that people could do and could repeat over and over again. This holds true in business. Sometimes, we think of the decisions that we make as something wise and good but at the back of our heads, we know that we have made some mistakes and profits could have dwindled down no matter how hard we sugar coat it.
Due to some reasons, some resellers opt to make purchases in small quantities. However, when this is the case in a particular reseller, more often than not, you need to double your purchase especially if the items you are selling are being disposed of like hotcakes.
There is an advantage but there are more disadvantages when you make purchases in small quantities. The advantage in making small purchases with some distributors or dealers is that you do not shelve out big money during these times.  You get to monitor the cash flow better and you will be able to monitor your money tightly as well.  So far, that is the only thing that seems to be an advantage for small purchases.

Now, let us look at the disadvantages. Just imagine yourself coordinating with your dealer or distributor every now and then. Communication is an important factor but if this communication goes out of hand, it is going to be a nuisance rather than turning it into a harmonious relationship. It takes two to tango and in order for you to be able to thrive well into this business you need to have good working relationships with certain people in order to make things work.
Another disadvantage is working yourself up in the deliveries of the items that you need.  Would it be beneficial for the distributor or dealer to be delivering the things that you need every now and then? Your distributor may not tell you that but that could be an issue that is waiting to be uncovered. Instead of waiting for this potential problem to surface, it would be best to address this concern as early as possible.
Buying cell phone accessories would better be managed if it is going to be bought in bulk and not as often as possible. It is similar to time management wherein you need to put everything in order for you to be able to handle things well. Buying in wholesale has its perks.  You do not experience out of stocks scenario for certain accessories. Just imagine your business experiencing out of stock supplies and seeing your customers flee and being lured by your competitor just because you do not have the accessory he or she is looking for.
When you also buy in bulk, you get better deals.  If things are bought in small quantities, distributors or dealers could hardly give you deals to die for. In return, you do not earn as much as you would when things are bought in wholesale.

Adobe's Flash products-Steve Job's/Adobe claims

In a rare open letter posted on Apple's website in April 2010, Jobs slammed Flash for being unreliable, outdated and proprietary, and criticized the programme for sapping battery power. Here's the text of the Steve Jobs' public letter on why his company's products don't support Adobe Flash.

Apple has a long relationship with Adobe. In fact, we met Adobe's founders when they were in their proverbial garage. Apple was their first big customer, adopting their Postscript language for our new Laserwriter printer. Apple invested in Adobe and owned around 20% of the company for many years.

The two companies worked closely together to pioneer desktop publishing and there were many good times. Since that golden era, the companies have grown apart. Apple went through its near death experience, and Adobe was drawn to the corporate market with their Acrobat products. Today the two companies still work together to serve their joint creative customers - Mac users buy around half of Adobe's Creative Suite products - but beyond that there are few joint interests.

I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe's Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven - they say we want to protect our App Store - but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true. Let me explain.

First, there's "Open".

Adobe's Flash products are 100% proprietary. They are only available from Adobe, and Adobe has sole authority as to their future enhancement, pricing, etc. While Adobe's Flash products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Adobe and available only from Adobe. By almost any definition, Flash is a closed system.

Apple has many proprietary products too. Though the operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is proprietary, we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the web should be open. Rather than use Flash, Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript - all open standards. Apple's mobile devices all ship with high performance, low power implementations of these open standards. HTML5, the new web standard that has been adopted by Apple, Google and many others, lets web developers create advanced graphics, typography, animations and transitions without relying on third party browser plug-ins (like Flash). HTML5 is completely open and controlled by a standards committee, of which Apple is a member.

Apple even creates open standards for the web. For example, Apple began with a small open source project and created WebKit, a complete open-source HTML5 rendering engine that is the heart of the Safari web browser used in all our products. WebKit has been widely adopted. Google uses it for Android's browser, Palm uses it, Nokia uses it, and RIM ( Blackberry) has announced they will use it too. Almost every smartphone web browser other than Microsoft's uses WebKit. By making its WebKit technology open, Apple has set the standard for mobile web browsers.

Second, there's the "full web".

Adobe has repeatedly said that Apple mobile devices cannot access "the full web" because 75% of video on the Web is in Flash. What they don't say is that almost all this video is also available in a more modern format, H.264, and viewable on iPhones, iPods and iPads. YouTube, with an estimated 40% of the web's video, shines in an app bundled on all Apple mobile devices, with the iPad offering perhaps the best YouTube discovery and viewing experience ever. Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren't missing much video.

Another Adobe claim is that Apple devices cannot play Flash games. This is true. Fortunately, there are over 50,000 games and entertainment titles on the App Store, and many of them are free. There are more games and entertainment titles available for iPhone, iPod and iPad than for any other platform in the world.

Third, there's reliability, security and performance.

Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don't want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.

In addition, Flash has not performed well on mobile devices. We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we're glad we didn't hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

Fourth, there's battery life.

To achieve long battery life when playing video, mobile devices must decode the video in hardware; decoding it in software uses too much power. Many of the chips used in modern mobile devices contain a decoder called H.264 - an industry standard that is used in every Blu-ray DVD player and has been adopted by Apple, Google (YouTube), Vimeo, Netflix and many other companies.

Although Flash has recently added support for H.264, the video on almost all Flash websites currently requires an older generation decoder that is not implemented in mobile chips and must be run in software. The difference is striking: on an iPhone, for example, H.264 videos play for up to 10 hours, while videos decoded in software play for less than 5 hours before the battery is fully drained.

When websites re-encode their videos using H.264, they can offer them without using Flash at all. They play perfectly in browsers like Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome without any plugins whatsoever, and look great on iPhones, iPods and iPads.

Fifth, there's Touch.

Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on "rollovers", which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple's revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn't use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover. Most Flash websites will need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices. If developers need to rewrite their Flash websites, why not use modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript?

Even if iPhones, iPods and iPads ran Flash, it would not solve the problem that most Flash websites need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices.

Sixth, the most important reason.

Besides the fact that Flash is closed and proprietary, has major technical drawbacks, and doesn't support touch based devices, there is an even more important reason we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. We have discussed the downsides of using Flash to play video and interactive content from websites, but Adobe also wants developers to adopt Flash to create apps that run on our mobile devices.

We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers.

This becomes even worse if the third party is supplying a cross platform development tool. The third party may not adopt enhancements from one platform unless they are available on all of their supported platforms. Hence developers only have access to the lowest common denominator set of features. Again, we cannot accept an outcome where developers are blocked from using our innovations and enhancements because they are not available on our competitor's platforms.

Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe's goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps. And Adobe has been painfully slow to adopt enhancements to Apple's platforms. For example, although Mac OS X has been shipping for almost 10 years now, Adobe just adopted it fully (Cocoa) two weeks ago when they shipped CS5. Adobe was the last major third party developer to fully adopt Mac OS X.

Our motivation is simple - we want to provide the most advanced and innovative platform to our developers, and we want them to stand directly on the shoulders of this platform and create the best apps the world has ever seen. We want to continually enhance the platform so developers can create even more amazing, powerful, fun and useful applications. Everyone wins - we sell more devices because we have the best apps, developers reach a wider and wider audience and customer base, and users are continually delighted by the best and broadest selection of apps on any platform.

Google-stop supporting apps of Gmail for-RIM's BlackBerry smartphones

With all the updates and new devices Android users are getting, BlackBerry users aren’t in the best of spirits. The biggest news they got that RIM was handing out free apps to apologies.

Google, the maker of Android software for mobile phones, will stop supporting the application of Gmail for rival Research in Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry smartphones.

“Beginning November 22, 2011, we will end support for the Gmail App for BlackBerry (installed native app). Over this past year, we’ve focused efforts on building a great Gmail experience in the mobile browser and will continue investing in this area,” Google said.

This means that from November 22, Google will stop supporting Gmail application for BlackBerry devices and the Gmail applications currently running on the BlackBerry will no longer be maintained and enhanced by Google.

However, users who have already downloaded the app may continue to use it, the company added.
