Samsung Galaxy nexus line:review with amazing features

The combination of Google's software and Samsung's hardware makes the Galaxy Nexus one of the best candidates to compete with Apple's latest iPhone, though its price is steep. It will be available Thursday in the US for $300 with a two-year Verizon Wireless contract.

Like the previous phone in the Nexus line, the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus was jointly developed by Google Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. It features a slim frame with a large, curved glass screen that's comfortable for chatting with friends and excellent for watching videos. There are 32 gigabytes of built-in storage space on the Verizon version of the phone, but no external slot for a microSD memory card.

The handset packs in some amazing features, such as a 720x1,280-pixel resolution 4.65-inch screen, a 1080p video camera and a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. The Galaxy Nexus is currently available from Phones 4u on a variety of networks, with monthly contract prices starting at £36. It's also available on pay as you go deals from companies like 3 and O2 for around £500, plus the cost of a standard top-up.

The screen, a pocket-busting 4.65 inches at the diagonal, makes the iPhone's 3.5-inches look diminutive. And despite the size, the Galaxy Nexus manages to weigh just 4.8 ounces, slightly less than Apple's offering.

With the latest version of Android under the hood, the Galaxy Nexus is packed with new and improved features. Many of them are great; others are simply great in theory.

Overall, the software looks fresher and less cluttered. The virtual "buttons" that usually sit at the bottom of the screen have been redesigned. There's still a "home" and a "back" button, but no "menu" button to pull up various options within an app. Instead, there's now a "recent apps" button that shows what you've been doing lately on the phone.  Another neat change: The buttons are completely virtual, so they change directions when you flip the phone sideways and disappear when you're viewing photos or videos.

Other changes to Android include an overhaul of its virtual keyboard, meant to make it easier to type without messing up - something I've always had trouble with on the stock Android keyboard. I was often able to type more accurately than in the past, but sometimes still ended up with unintended words in my messages. The Android browser and Gmail are updated, too. Gmail's new functions include the ability to search emails while offline, while the browser is zippier and has a "request desktop" option so you can check out webpages in their non-truncated desktop version.

One new feature that falls into the "great in theory" category is Face Unlock, which uses facial-recognition technology to unlock the phone from standby mode. To set it up, you take a picture of your face with the phone. Then, all you have to do to unlock the phone is stare at the screen after you press the power button.

Ever since we reviewed the excellent Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone here at Mashable, everyone’s been wondering, when will it appear on Verizon? Now it’s finally official: The on-again/off-again smartphone, which we think is the best Android phone ever produced, will be available on Verizon starting Thursday, Dec. 15 for $299.99 with a two-year contract. That was announced late Wednesday in a press release from Verizon Wireless, Samsung and Google.

Unlike the Google plain-vanilla Galaxy Samsung Galaxy Nexus we tested here, this Verizon version will be capable of using a 4G LTE network. What will that mean for you? If you’re lucky enough to live in one of Verizon’s 190 markets with 4G LTE in the United States, the phone can download data at speeds of 5 to 12 Megabits (Mb) per second, and upload at speeds of 2Mb to 5Mb per second. What does this mean in layman’s terms? If Verizon’s network proves itself to be as fast as the company says it is in your area, with this smartphone you’ll be able to use the Internet at speeds similar to that of home broadband.

Just like our test unit, the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus will have the new Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system on board, along with all the other high-tech capabilities that make it so appealing. For instance, the features we liked the best were its 4.65-inch 720p screen that has a delightful curved design, and its 9.47mm-thin form factor that felt just right in the hand and pocket. Read our Samsung Galaxy Nexus review for details.

Android 4.0 finally seems to have put those spectres to bed. Actions such as sending an email or posting a photo to Twitter take seconds to achieve. It almost feels as if the phone is one step ahead of you, such is the pace of the device.

While the Galaxy Nexus shames practically every previous Android phone in terms of usability, it struggles in some key areas. The all-plastic design is disappointing when placed alongside the iPhone 4S and HTC Sensation.

Samsung has a habit of avoiding the use of brushed metal on its phones. In this instance, we'd have liked to have seen a little more sophistication in the case design -- especially when you consider that the Galaxy Nexus retails for around the same price as the aluminium and tempered-glass iPhone.

More immediately useful was the phone's 5-megapixel camera, which is the snappiest I've seen on any Android phone. There was almost no shutter lag between shots, even when I had just turned the camera on.

Still, I would have preferred a higher-resolution sensor-8-megapixel cameras are quickly becoming common on smartphones. In addition, photos I took could have been brighter, though this can be improved on somewhat by using some of the available editing options, including numerous color filters and adjustable contrast options.

Like the iPhone 4S and some other high-end smartphones, the Galaxy Nexus can record high-definition videos in 1080p - the best resolution you can get on a consumer camera. I had some fun taking sunset videos with a time-lapse feature, and there are some goofy filming effects to play around with, too.

And yes, you can make calls on the Galaxy Nexus. Its thin body and curved screen make it comfortable to hold against your ear, and calls generally sounded good.

Sadly, high-speed networks guzzle battery power like a milkshake, so I wasn't able to spend a ton of time using the device on a single battery charge.

The phone Google loaned me to test was a version that works with AT&T or T-Mobile, so I couldn't test its speed or battery life with the carrier actually selling it in the US, Verizon, or with its high-speed 4G network.

Using both T-Mobile's standard 3G and speedier HSPA+ networks, at least, I got about three hours and 15 minutes out of the Galaxy Nexus for surfing the Web, streaming a movie, sending instant messages, chatting on the phone and other activities. The phone got quite warm with all this use. Over Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network, it's possible that the phone's battery would drain even faster if you're doing a lot of downloading.

Another bummer: Verizon is blocking the Galaxy Nexus from supporting Google Wallet, which is supposed to allow the phone to be used to buy items in some stores by tapping it to payment terminals.

Ice Cream Sandwich new Android Version 4.0 Operating system

Ice cream sandwich-Android 4.0

Ice Cream Sandwich is the name of the newest version of the Android operating system. And many of the people waiting for it might end up disappointed.

Android Version 4.0 has been tempting smartphone users with its polished user interface and a few new functions. But a dpa survey of manufacturers says it might be a while yet. And not every new model is necessarily going to get an update. The delay is a function of variety. A whole series of manufacturers are making Android mobiles, and each of them builds upon the Google software to create its own interface or add special features.

“This breadth of functions separates our products from the competition,” explains Ralf Gerbershagen, head of Motorola in Germany. Motorola, for example, has an Android business-ready package.

But that means before a new version of Android can be installed, a company’s own programmers have to have a crack at it. “When there’s an update, then the appropriate project team has to take the time to make the new version of Android match, to make sure that everything functions seamlessly,” says Gerbershagen. New functions possible with Ice Cream Sandwich include one that allows the camera to be activated out of standby mode, meaning it can recognize upon startup whether the person holding the phone is the owner. The function is called Face Unlock.

In the new version phones with integrated near field communication systems will be able to swap data easily. There’s also something new in apps. Since Google has merged the software for smartphones and tablets, developers no longer have to make two versions of everything, which should increase variety and allow hardware makers to focus on only one set of compatibility issues. Google has a history of naming its new mobile operating systems after deserts. Version 1.5 was dubbed Cupcake, while 2.3 was named Gingerbread. Version 3.0, which hit the market at the start of 2011, for tablets, is Honeycomb. Ice Cream Sandwich is the logical extension. Samsung will have the first Ice Cream Sandwich mobile. A Galaxy Nexus presentation in October showed what Android 4.0 can do. But the South Korean company still isn’t saying which device will get the new system, although its British subsidiary has said via Twitter that the lucky machine will be the Galaxy S II. Motorola expects an update to its flagship Droid Razr “probably in the first half of 2012.” But earlier versions of the trimmed-down mobile will only have Gingerbread. Other details won’t be available until six weeks after publication of the source codes.

Since Google only recently starting uploading those, users will have to at least wait until the new year. From Motorola, there will only be Gingerbread through the end of 2011. Google is set to take over Motorola’s Mobility mobile division, meaning that Motorola phones might soon get updates faster. But until the deal is done, Motorola users will have to be patient. HTC is also being coy, saying various of its devices will start using Ice Cream Sandwich “starting in the spring of 2012.” Models slated for the new system include the XL and XE, as well as the HTC Evo 3D. But the Wildfire and Desire are not listed for a system update.

At the same time, the Taiwanese company promises to “continually improve its product portfolio and to announce as early as possible updates with Ice Cream Sandwich for additional devices.” Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson wants to update all Android smartphones introduced in 2011 from Version 2.3.4 to 4.0. The company will announce in its blog when it plans to upgrade the Xperia series, which will help out users of the Xperia X10, Xperia Neo and Xperia Play.

LG is also holding out hope for its clients, while saying that it can’t report anything about the planned updates.

India-Google+:The quick look with mobiles

Lightning-fast group chat. Photos that upload themselves. A bird's-eye view of what's happening nearby. We built Google+ with mobile in mind.
Real-life sharing,
rethought for the web.

A quick look at Google+

Google+ makes connecting on the web more like connecting in the real world. Share your thoughts, links and photos with the right circles. Use easy, spontaneous video chat to strike up conversations with as many as nine people at once. Get everyone on the same page with fast, simple group chat. We’re very excited about the new approach to sharing we’ve created through Google+, but this is really just the beginning.
Circles

You share different things with different people. But sharing the right stuff with the right people shouldn’t be a hassle. Circles make it easy to put your friends from Saturday night in one circle, your parents in another, and your boss in a circle by himself, just like real life.
Hangouts

Bumping into friends while you’re out is one of the best parts of going out and about. With Hangouts, spontaneity hits the web. Whether you’re home in your pajamas or hitting the streets with your mobile phone, video hangouts let you bring up to 9 people into your world. It’s the next best thing to everyone being there.
Games

Google+ has a game room.

Play poker, build a new civilization, humiliate a pig, or just click wildly at anything that moves. When you do something worth talking about, it’s easy to share it just with the people interested in your gaming updates. Beating a friend’s high score is always a good excuse to say hi.
Search

What was that restaurant your friend was raving about last week? Who’s got some good tips on ballroom dancing? What’s it like to be at the World Cup? Search brings you updates from your circles, news from around the web and

public Google+ posts, giving you instant access to the topics you care about and the people who care about them along with you.
Taking photos is fun. Sharing photos is fun. Getting photos off your phone and on to the web is pretty much the opposite of fun. That’s why we created Instant Upload: so that you never have to worry about losing those memories. From now on, your photos upload themselves.

Variant of RFID-radio frequency identification:NFC

NFC
NFC, or near-field communication, is a variant of RFID, or radio frequency identification. It is an ultra short range wireless technology that allows communication and data exchange between two devices held in tight proximity - about 4 cm apart.

Bluetooth is also a short-range high frequency wireless technology but one that allows interaction between communication devices as much as 10 meters apart.
NFC-enabled smartphones have the potential to replace credit cards. This is because NFC phones pack a smart chip - a complex 80-character code that is really hard to crack. Such a device can safely store confidential credit card details and be handy for purchases on the go.

Frost & Sullivan predicts the technology will revolutionise e-commerce and drive over $150 billion worth of transactions by 2015, bulk of which is expected to be powered by NFC phones.
NFC can be deployed in ticketing services, rural banking, interactive and targeted advertising, healthcare, hospitality, libraries and pharmacies. In fact, an NFC phone could become the single-key to access to your car, home and office.
Any device, a cellphone, a camera or a watch, can be equipped with an NFC 'initiator', which is simply an antenna that can store data. If the device is an NFC smartphone, the 'initiator' and 'target' (an NFC reader) need to be up close for data exchange to happen.

The 'reader' is attached to a point-of-sale (PoS) terminal or cash-register in a retail store that accepts NFC payments. A simple wave of the phone can pay for a purchase. Alternatively, two NFC phones can be tapped lightly to exchange business cards.

Geeks claim that in standby mode, a well-designed NFC solution does not consume any power. And since transactions happen in seconds, the power drain is not huge.
Globally, NFC adoption is picking up via smartphones. RIM, Nokia, Samsung and HTC have unveiled NFC smartphones. Apple iPhone5 is tipped to support NFC too. Google Wallet - a mobile payments technology that can be downloaded on some US mobile networks - is growing the NFC ecosystem. Payment trials have also begun in Australia, Singapore and China.
The technology is still in its infancy here. As of now, the Reserve Bank does not recognise NFC mobile payment transactions and PoS terminals accepting NFC payments don't exist. But NFC-enabled phones like BlackBerry's Touch Bold 9900 and Curve 9360, Samsung's Nexus S and Galaxy S II and Nokia's C7, 700, 701 and 600 are available. For NFC to take off, RBI has to frame norms and banks, carriers, credit card companies, apps developers and PoS terminal makers have to team up.

But awareness levels are growing and NFC is making some waves in entertainment. Shah Rukh Khan starrer Ra.One was the first movie to be marketed by Nokia using NFC technology. Armed with an NFC phone, you can download the movie content by merely tapping the device on a NFC-tagged movie poster at a Nokia priority outlet or a partner multiplex.

The new software update iOS 5.0.1 by Apple-to fix widespread problems:iphone 4s

Apple iphone4s

Apple issued a software update to its latest mobile operating system in a move to fix widespread problems with the battery life of the iPhone 4S.

The software update, iOS 5.0.1 also adds multi-tasking gestures to early versions of the iPad and closes a security loophole that could have duped users into loading malware onto their iPhones and iPads through Apple’s App Store.

Complaints about the disappointing battery life began popping up immediately after the release of the iPhone 4S last month, which Apple acknowledged in a statement last week.

“A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices,” Apple wrote. “We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life, and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” The software update was the first one issued by Apple that was pushed to users over the cellular networks, rather than requiring them to sync up their devices with their laptops.

Airtel Delhi Half Marathon race:"Gold Label Event"-registration process to Friends

It’s that time of the year again when Delhi's sports lovers come together to reaffirm their commitment towards converting the city into a healthier and fitter one through the simple, but joyful task of running. Around 30,000 sports loving people and health and fitness enthusiasts are expected to come together to run shoulder to shoulder with some of the world's leading distance runners along with India's best when the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon will be flagged off in Delhi on November 27, 2011, under the aegis of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). The world's most prestigious Half Marathon race, recognised by IAAF as a "Gold Label Event" and certified by the Association of International Marathons and Road Races, returns for the seventh year, and for the fourth time in its current avatar of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. This year the marathon is dedicated to ‘Friends’ and invites all like minded people to come together in true spirit of camaraderie and friendship.

The registrations for the event were declared open by Sanjay Kapoor, CEO-India & South Asia, of Bharti Airtel, in the presence of Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of Delhi, Bipash Basu, the ‘Face of the Event’, high ranking officials from AFI, the various partners to the event and Anil Singh and Vivek B Singh of Procam International, the promoters of the event at a press conference at the Official Host Hotel Le Meridien in New Delhi on Tuesday, August 23.

The occasion was also used to introduce Timex as the new Timing Partner to the event and announce the Inter-Collegiate Sporting Challenge, an exciting initiative targeted at the vast resources of athletic talent present in Delhi’s colleges. Some novel additions aimed at enhancing the running experience of the serious amateur runners were also announced.

Announcing the registrations open, Sanjay Kapoor, CEO-India & South Asia, Bharti Airtel said, “Airtel’s success story is synonymous with determination, perseverance and the ability to never lose sight of the long term goal, just like a seasoned runner. We salute the spirit of forging ahead in the long race and are delighted to be associated with the Delhi Half Marathon for the 4th consecutive year. Taking a leaf out of our new campaign “Har ek friend zaroori hai yaar”, we urge all of you to bring alive the spirit of togetherness and camaraderie. As we come closer to ADHM 2011, I am confident that the city of Delhi will take a lead in inspiring friends to come together and participate in large numbers.”

Prize money of USD 210,000 on offer helps the event maintain its status as the world's richest half marathon and is expected to attract 40 of the world's top 100 male and female long distance athletes. The event will also witness the presence of some of the biggest names from the world of sport as Event Ambassadors.

Boost to serious runners: The practice of putting a chip on the shoes of all half marathon participants since the last two years has been welcomed by one and all and has helped elevate the level of the half marathon field to an extent where all participants in that category can be termed serious runners.

Going further, promoters Procam International will recognize the efforts of the serious runners by offering priority starts to them based on their timings. Based on the timing certificates, runners will be eligible for priority lineups on race day and will be divided into four sections. The first section will be for runners under two hours, followed by those between 2 hours to under 2 hours, 30 minutes. The third section will be for runners between 2 hours, 30 minutes to under 3 hours, while the last section will be for runners of 3 hours and above.

The timing certificate will also ensure that the applicant gets preference over non-timed participants in the registration process. There will also be a number of running places reserved for women applicants to encourage them to train and run in the half marathon. Applicants who are not timed will fall in the open category, for which there will be limited places that will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

It is evident from the number of people registering for the half marathon, that the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon has helped inculcate the culture of running and fitness among the populace of Delhi. Last year around 8,000 people registered for the half marathon and the figure is expected to be higher this time around as 10,000 running spaces have been reserved for the Half Marathon category.

Besides the Half Marathon, which occupies pride of place, race day has been packed with features like the Great Delhi Run, the Senior Citizen's Run and the Wheelchair Event, giving every Delhiite above the age of 12 an opportunity to emerge winners in their own right.

Inter-Collegiate Sporting Challenge: Delhi’s Universities and colleges enjoy a rich and glorious sporting tradition and have helped create many national and international sportspersons in various disciplines. The Inter-Collegiate Sporting Challenge will now give these colleges a further opportunity to earn for themselves the unique distinction of being the Champion College of the Delhi Half Marathon. What better platform than an IAAF Gold Label event and what better inspiration than to be running alongside some of the world’s and India’s leading long distance athletes.

While invitations will be sent to all the universities of Delhi, participation will be restricted to only 30 college teams and entries will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Only one team will be allowed per college and each team should comprise three members between the age of 17 to 23. Of the three members, at least one member should be a female. Girls colleges can field an all-girls team. Each member will be required to run approximately 7 kms.

The champion college will win prize money of Rs 30,000 besides a replica of the rotating trophy, while the 1st runner-up and second runner-up teams will take home Rs 15,000 and Rs 9,000 respectively. The members of the winning teams will be presented with medals and merit certificates, while participation certificates will be awarded to the members of all the other teams.

New Timing Partner: As part of its association with the three Gold Label distance running events promoted by Procam International, global watch major Timex will be the Timing Partner of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. The association kick started with the World 10K Bangalore and will continue with the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and the Mumbai Marathon.

Timex has a history of sporting associations and has always chosen to associate with events where split-second timing and precision is of the essence. The global watch major has been the principal sponsor and the exclusive Official Timing Partner of the prestigious ING New York City Marathon and the Trusted Training Partner of the New York Giants. Over the years, Timex has always encouraged running and has been closely involved with Marathons and been the global sponsor for Triathlons internationally with the Timex Multisport Team competing in Triathlon competitions worldwide. Ironman is a classic case of a long-term Timex association which has fuelled extreme sports and the concept of racing against time for years now.
