Parag Desai
, executive director, Wagh Bakri Tea Group switched to another telecom operator a month ago. "I had been facing connectivity issues especially while traveling. Since I interact with a lot of people from Indiamobile number portability (MNP) at the end of 100 days on April 30.
and abroad, I did not want to let my contacts suffer by changing my number." Over eight lakh mobile phone users from Gujarat have opted for

Data released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), 85.40 lakh mobile phone users applied for MNP in the country as on April 30, 2011. Of these, maximum requests — 8.34 lakh — came from Gujarat. In March 2011, 6.17 lakh users in Gujarat sought change in numbers out of 64.23 lakh requests from across the country.

The MNP service was made available across the country on January 20 this year after its phase one launch in Haryana on November 25, 2010. After Gujarat, mobile phone users in Rajasthan have made the maximum portability requests at 7.10 lakh followed by Karnataka (6.63 lakh) and Tamil Nadu (6.41 lakh).

Rajesh Dongre
, chief operating officer, Vodafone Essar, said, "The only reason Gujarat tops the MNP request list is because the Gujarati customer is a far more value-seeking subscriber". Udit Nagar, a Vadodara-based IT professional, had applied for MNP immediately after it was launched. "I had major connectivity issues with my previous service provider. MNP just made it convenient for me to change the operator without changing the number."

As per industry sources, the primary reason for changing operators is the search of value-for-money. "A lot of subscribers are looking at value for every penny spent. Besides, the customer is spoilt for choice with many telecom players having presence in the market. If a customer is unhappy with a service, they move on to better players," said senior vice-president of a telecom company.
