Engineers are trying to figure it out with software that helps people locate their friends in a crowd - and make new friends sharing similar interests. For instance, at a business meeting, the software could remind a user of a forgotten acquaintance's name, or help him make new professional contacts in the same area of research.

Dong Xuan, associate professor of computer science and engineering at Ohio State University, said: "Today, online social networking has advanced dramatically, but our ability to meet people face-to-face hasn't gotten any easier."

Called eShadow, the software uses nearby wireless networks and smart phones' wireless communication technologies to alert users that a friend who also uses the software is in the area and gives directions to that friend's location, according to a Ohio statement. "We want eShadow to close social gaps and connect people in meaningful ways while keeping the technology non-intrusive and protecting privacy," said Xuan, who led the project.

As to users' safety, Xuan feels that, at least for some situations, meeting someone in person is safer than meeting them online. "Online, people can steal others' identity, or lie easily without detection. The name eShadow comes from the idea that users input their interests into the software, and their smart phone broadcasts those interests to certain other users of the software - but only within 50 yards of the phone. So as users move, the broadcast follows them around like a shadow.

In outdoor tests, they measured how fast the software could detect users who were 20, 30, and 50 yards apart. They tested different numbers of users, from two to seven. In all cases, the software was able to connect people within about half a minute - an average of 25 seconds for two users, and 35 seconds for seven. Soldiers could use something akin to eShadow to locate each other on the battlefield.

These findings were presented at the IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS) Thursday in Minneapolis.

Bharti Airtel said it plans in its businesses

Mobile carrier Bharti Airtel said it plans to undertake restructuring exercise in its businesses, which is expected to have ‘minimal impact’ on jobs.

Bharti has pioneered the strategic outsourcing model and created efficiency. "Such initiatives wherever and whenever appropriate will find favour," the firm said in a statement without elaborating on the restructuring plans.

Earlier, the Economic Times said Bharti Airtel will merge three separate businesses, which includes mobile, satellite TV, and fixed-line, broadband telemedia business. The businesses jointly account for about 90 per cent of its revenues. The paper estimated the job losses to be more than 2,000 of the current strength of 11,500 employees. In May, Bharti, 32.3-per cent owned by Southeast Asia's biggest phone firm SingTel, had reported a fall in net profit of the fourth quarter to March to 14 billion rupees from 20.44 billion rupees in the year ago period.

In a separate statement, the company said it has crossed 5 million customer marks in Bangladesh. In Jan 2010, Bharti had acquired 70 percent stake in Warid Telecom, the fourth-largest mobile company in Bangladesh, and subsequently launched its brand in December. Shares of Bharti Airtel on the Bombay Stock Exchange closed 2.55 per cent higher in a strong Mumbai market on Friday.

HTC mobile company was announced of its tablet

Smart phone manufacturer HTC on 27^th June, 2011 announced the launch of its first tablet - HTC Flyer - in India to compete with the already existing players such as Samsung's Galaxy Tab, Blackberry Playbook and Apple iPad.

The seven-inch touch screen tablet is powered with HTC sense, a graphical user interface and it combines natural touch and pen interaction.

HTC also announced HTC watch, a new connected video service that will debut on HTC Flyer tablet, and will collaborate with the pioneer of cloud gaming Onlive, Inc to launch the first cloud-based mobile gaming service on a tablet.

"HTC believes that many people are progressing beyond a single wireless device paradigm into an era where some will own multiple wireless devices that serve their different needs. We saw an opportunity to create a tablet experience that is different, more personal and productive," said Faisal Siddiqui, country manager, HTC India.

The tap phones

As reports surfaced of the tapping of the phones of the Silchar-based sister and a friend in Kolkata of the former Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), S.D. Majumder, it turned out that the numbers were included in the list by some “disgruntled elements” in the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. The interception reportedly took place last year when Mr. Majumder was in the race for CBEC chief.

“In this case, permission was sought to tap certain phones which supposedly belonged to suspect smugglers,” senior officials of the Union Home Ministry say, admitting that there was no mechanism in place to cross-check and verify the numbers. Interestingly, the Home Ministry has not received any request for phone-tapping from the CBDT since February this year, according to well-placed sources. Phone-tapping requests from economic intelligence agencies are routed through the Revenue Secretary and the CBDT chief to the Union Home Secretary.

All requests by the Central government agencies, including those under the Finance Ministry and the Central Bureau of Investigation, need the approval of the Union Home Secretary. But senior officials admit that the goof-ups have put a question mark over the integrity of the system which is not foolproof. They do not rule out the possibility of the numbers of innocent citizens being put on the list of those of suspects. Initially, the approval to tap phones is given for 60 days; if the request is repeated for tapping for another 60 days, the agency concerned will have to give detailed reasons. Yet another extension of 60 days is permissible, but no permission is given beyond 180 days, the sources said.

Last month, an inter-ministerial group, headed by the Home Secretary, unveiled strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) to regulate phone-tapping by government agencies. Clearly, the decision came after industrialist Ratan Tata moved the Supreme Court following the leak of the tapped conversations of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia.

The SOPs include creation of a special cell in the law enforcement agencies to deal with all aspects of phone and email interception; appointment of a nodal officer and a specialized system administrator to deal with all hardware, software and records of intercepts; the regular vetting of the staff of the special phone by intelligence agency; Under the SOPs, only relevant portions of original inputs will be shared with other agencies for investigation, but without revealing their sources and mode of collection; hard copies will have to be destroyed by shredding and burning and soft copies will have to be deleted permanently from the system's hardware; and storing devices, pen drives, DVDs, CDs and floppies will be ground to fine powder.

The Supreme Court, in the PUCL vs. Union of India in 1997, had ruled that telephone conversation in private, without interference, would come under the purview of right to privacy as mandated in the Constitution; and unlawful means of phone-tapping amounted to invasion of privacy and were uncivilized and undemocratic in nature.

ST-Ericsson says:

Chip maker ST-Ericsson says it plans to cut up to 500 jobs worldwide as part of a move to save $120 million a year.

The joint venture between Swedish wireless equipment firm LM Ericsson AB and Swiss chipmaker STMicroelectronics said Thursday it will launch a new cost-cutting plan to achieve the savings by the end of 2012.

The Geneva-based joint venture blamed the cutbacks on "recent changes in the business environment and reduced demand for legacy products at certain customers.''

It said it will announce further details of the layoffs and which countries will be affected after it has been in contact with unions.

A Japanese company has come up with a new way to charge your mobile phone after a natural disaster or in the great outdoors - by heating a pot of water over a campfire.

The Hatsuden-Nabe thermo-electric cookpot turns heat from boiling water into electricity that feeds via a USB port into digital devices such as smart phones, music players and global positioning systems. TES NewEnergy, based in the western city of Osaka, started selling the gadget in Japan this month for 24,150 yen ($299), and plans to market it later in developing countries with patchy power grids.

Chief executive Kazuhiro Fujita said the invention was inspired by Japan's March 11 earthquake and tsunami that left 23,000 people dead or missing devastated the northeast region and left hundreds of thousands homeless. "When I saw the TV footage of the quake victims making a fire to keep themselves warm, I came up with the idea of helping them to charge their mobile phones at the same time," Fujita said.

The pot features strips of ceramic thermoelectric material that generate electricity through temperature differentials between the 550 degrees Celsius at the bottom of the pot and the water boiling inside at 100 degrees. The company says the device takes three to five hours to charge an iPhone and can heat up your lunch at the same time. "Unlike a solar power generator, our pot can be used regardless of time of day and weather while its small size allows people to easily carry it in a bag in case of evacuation," said director and co-developer Ryoji Funahashi.

TES New Energy was set up in 2010 to promote products based on technology developed at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan's largest public research organization. It also makes and markets equipment to transform residual heat from industrial waste furnaces into electricity. The company says the pot will be used mainly in emergency situations and for outdoor activities, but also has uses in developing countries.

An Australian University team, led by an Indian-origin researcher, has developed a mechanism where. According to Dr Madhu Bhaskaran and colleagues from RMIT University and the Australian National University, piezoelectric nano-films will convert movement into small electrical charges.

They measured the potential of piezoelectric nano-films to provide energy for small electronic devices. "With the drive for alternative energy solutions, we need to find more efficient ways to power microchips, which are the building blocks of everyday technology like the smarter phone or faster computer," Bhaskaran told the ABC Science.

"Piezoelectric could be integrated into running shoes to charge mobile phones, enable laptops to be powered through typing or even used to convert blood pressure into a power source for pacemakers — essentially creating an everlasting battery,” she added. Research into the possibility of piezoelectric material using human energy to power devices is not a new field. Electronic devices already have integrated chips, which are coated in thin films, so the integration of piezoelectric films onto the chip would be a simple process, said Bhaskaran.

To assess voltage generation they coated a silicon substrate with 700 and 1400 nanometer thick lead-based (PSZT) films and applied very small forces of between 0.1 millinewtons (mN) and 2.5 mN. They then created 200 to 400 nm ‘nano-islands’ from the 700 nm film to assess whether textured surfaces created more energy than continuous surfaces. While the planar geometry had no influence on the voltage generation, it did increase the current.

Baskharan and her team achieved voltage outputs of up to 40 mV and currents up to around 200 picoamps (pA). They found the effective power generated by nano-films was around 250 microwatts with a force of 5 mN. That''s about 10 times less than the power you need to run a smart phone, so the next challenge will be to amplify the electrical energy so it can be integrated into electrical devices, said Bhaskaran.

Blackberry cuts 200 employees of bleeding on the stock market

After two days of bleeding on the stock market in the wake of its disappointing quarterly results, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) Tuesday reportedly laid off 200 employees at its headquarters in Waterloo near here. Though RIM didn't confirm job cuts, the local media said 200 'manufacturing' employees were issued pink slips when they arrived for work at the RIM headquarters.

Of RIM's 17,500 employees worldwide, about 9,000 work at its headquarters and regional offices around its hub. The BlackBerry maker had announced "cost-optimization programmed'' May 28 after announcing its first quarterly results which saw its revenue slip to $4.9 billion from $5.6 billion in the same period a year ago.

RIM profits also shrank to $695 million from $769 million during the same period last year. Though RIM stock recovered more than nine percent Tuesday to close at $27.74, analysts said the wireless icon is ripe for a takeover target by giants like Google and Microsoft. They said RIM's near-term prospects don't look bright as it is way behind in updating its aging BlackBerry handsets, with Apple and Google Android devices fast grabbing its market share.

But still unrivalled for its secure encrypted email messaging system that remains the standard for corporates and governments, analysts said RIM could be a tempting proposition for Apple, Microsoft, and even Dell and Oracle. Apple and Microsoft currently have cash piles of over $40 billion each, while the current market value of the BlackBerry company is just $14 billion. Bloomberg News quoted Paul Taylor, chief investment officer at BMO (Bank of Montreal) Harris Private Banking in Toronto, as saying, "Given how significant the deterioration of the stock price has been, that alone will cause interest'' in RIM.

"RIM still has meaningful market share in the US and meaningful market share internationally, and RIM has an iconic brand.'' RIM's value has plunged from $83 billion in June 2008 under onslaught from Apple's iPhone and Google Android-run devices.
